Everton Free School Teacher Celebrates Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Event at Buckingham Palace

Everton Free School is delighted to share that English Teacher Laura Lucas recently had the honour of attending Buckingham Palace as part of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award Celebrations.

The invitation recognised Laura's involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme and provided a unique opportunity to join participants and leaders from across the country in celebrating the achievements of young people who have successfully completed their Gold Awards.

Reflecting on the experience, Laura said:

"It was a truly memorable experience and one that I feel extremely privileged and grateful to have received. Representing Everton Free School at Buckingham Palace was an honour that I will cherish for many years."

The Gold Award Celebrations brought together individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, all united by their commitment to the values of perseverance, resilience and personal development that sit at the heart of the DofE programme.

As a Duke of Edinburgh Leader at Everton Free School, Laura recognises the importance of supporting young people beyond the completion of the Award itself.

"Becoming a Duke of Edinburgh Leader has shown me that our responsibility goes beyond completing the Award. It is about encouraging others to challenge themselves, demonstrate resilience and embrace new opportunities for personal growth. Attending this event reinforced the importance of these values and highlighted the transformative influence that the Award has on young people."

Throughout the day, Laura had the opportunity to hear inspiring stories from Gold Award holders, learn about their individual journeys and celebrate the accomplishments of young people from across the United Kingdom.

"The atmosphere throughout the day was incredibly positive and uplifting. There was a genuine sense of pride and achievement, and I was humbled to stand alongside such accomplished young people."

Alongside fellow attendees, Laura also enjoyed exploring the beautiful grounds of Buckingham Palace while reflecting on the wider impact of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

"Beyond the physical challenges and volunteering commitments, the DofE Award develops leadership, self-confidence, independence and a strong sense of community responsibility. These are values that I am committed to promoting through my leadership role."

Since its foundation in 1956, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has helped millions of young people develop essential life skills, confidence and resilience. Laura's experience at Buckingham Palace further strengthened her commitment to the programme and the opportunities it provides for young people.

"Witnessing an event such as this demonstrated how challenges can be transformed into qualities that shape individuals into confident, resilient and capable members of society."

Everyone at Everton Free School congratulates Laura on this fantastic achievement and thanks her for representing the school with such distinction at this prestigious national celebration. Her dedication to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme continues to inspire students to embrace new challenges and realise their full potential.
