Bringing Kathakali to Everton Free School

An Experience of South India, Exploring the Art of Kathakali (Classical Dance Drama from Kerala, South India)
Everton Free School was proud to host a unique cultural experience centred on Kathakali, a traditional dance-drama originating from the southern Indian state of Kerala.
Kathakali is a highly visual and expressive art form that has been performed for over 500 years. Rooted in the storytelling traditions of Hindu temples, it combines intricate hand gestures, detailed facial expressions, elaborate costumes, and striking makeup to bring stories to life.
This enriching project provided students with the opportunity to engage with non-Western theatre traditions, broadening their cultural awareness and encouraging creative exploration through performance and visual storytelling.
About the Artists
We were delighted to welcome two highly respected practitioners who led this experience:
Kalamandalam Vijayakumar – Kathakali Artist
Kalamandalam Vijayakumar is an internationally renowned Kathakali performer and Co-Director of the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company. With a career spanning over four decades, he has toured globally since 1982 and has been a leading figure in introducing Kathakali to audiences across the UK since 1987. His work has reached thousands of people in cities, towns, and rural communities, making him one of the foremost Kathakali experts in the country.
Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar – Kathakali Makeup Specialist & Visual Artist
Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar is a highly skilled visual artist and Kathakali makeup specialist. She trained at Rochdale College of Art, Winchester School of Art, and the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam in India.
